Dr. Ulf Schmitz

Research interest

As long-time member of the Department of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics I benefitted from more than 10 years experience in interdisciplinary collaborations. My personal interest and goals lie on the integration of bioinformatics and systems biology methods to challenge biomedical problems.

In particular I am designing integrative workflows combining various computational disciplines with experimentation to approach molecular biological and medical problems (see exemplary workflow here). These workflows are implemented and applied to identify and study molecular interactions, functional mechanisms of gene-regulation, cell signaling pathways and gene regulatory networks for the goal of getting deeper insights into disease emergence and progression with a focus on different cancer entities. In this context the ultimate goal is to identify possible avenues for therapeutic interventions and optimized treatment schedules.

Collaborations

I enjoy collaborating and discussing with colleagues in the department which profits from engaged people with heterogeneous backgrounds. Furthermore, I am involved in several collaborations with biomedical research institutes in the University and beyond.

More specifically in a project with the Institute of Experimental Gene Therapy and Cancer Research (Rostock), led by Prof. Brigitte P
