International experts explore Complexity Theory at STIAS
Stellenbosch, Thursday 23rd June 2005

A very successful workshop on new developments in Complexity Theory took place at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) last week.

Complexity Theory is gaining in prominence and importance and has implications for a wide range of fields. Prof. Paul Cilliers of Stellenbosch, who is internationally respected for his work in this area, led the discussions. The focus of the workshop was on specific areas of application, including philosophy, the biological sciences, ecology, mathematics and organisations.

Among the international experts who presented papers were Proff. Brian Goodwin (Schumacher College), Alicia Juarrero (Prince George’s Community College, Maryland), Peter Allen, Olaf Wolkenhhauer (Rostock University) and John Collins (University of KwaZulu-Natal). Stellenbosch participants included Professors Johan Kinghorn, Mark Swilling, Hendrik
Geyer, Jannie Hofmeyr, Jacky Snoep, Johan Rohwer, Wynand Coetzer, Hans Eggers, Kristian Müller-Nedebock and Bernard Lategan as well as Dr Hans Müller and Mr Christiaan Maasdorp.

Several promising themes were identified and new research partnerships were formed which hopefully will be explored further in the form of STIAS research projects.
